Daily Hitting Report

Real-time offensive performance evaluation for daily team analysis

Project Overview

Using R as a tool and Trackman CSVs as my data, I aimed to make a report that could be used daily to evaluate a team's hitters during the competitive Cape Cod Baseball League season.

R Programming Trackman Data Daily Analytics Cape Cod Baseball League

Project Description

Working as a Baseball Analytics Intern for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod Baseball League, I aimed to create a coded report in R that could be used on a day-to-day basis to evaluate a team's hitters. The report uses Trackman data to present statistics relating to a hitter's performance in terms of contact quality, contact rates based on pitch type/location as well as ball/strike count, general approach and swing decisions, and on-base metrics.

It is also color coded based on league averages for better interpretability. I find the day-to-day use of this report useful because it not only shows you season-long performance, but also recent performance in terms of both a hitter's last 18 plate appearances and their most recent game. This is useful for identifying long term season trends as well as how hitters have been performing recently.

Key Report Features

  • Season-long performance statistics for comprehensive trend analysis
  • Last 18 plate appearances for recent form evaluation
  • Most recent game statistics for immediate feedback
  • Color-coded metrics based on league averages for quick interpretation
  • Multi-dimensional analysis covering contact quality, approach, and on-base performance

Statistical Metrics Definitions

Performance Metrics

Bullet/Swing
Bullets divided by Qualified Swings. A Bullet is defined as exit velocity 90+ mph with launch angle 0-40º. Qualified Swings are all swings except two-strike swings resulting in foul balls. Tables sorted by descending Bullet/Swing.
Squared-up EV
Average exit velocity on squared-up balls. Squared-up balls are defined as balls in play with exit velocity 85 mph or greater and launch angle between -5º and 40º.
Mis-Hit%
Number of mis-hits divided by balls in play. A mis-hit is a ball in play with launch angle less than -10º or greater than 40º.

Approach Metrics

FB-Middle Sw%
Swing percentage on fastballs in the middle of the zone before reaching two-strike counts. Measures aggression on hittable pitches.
Chase%
Percentage of swings on pitches in the chase zone. Chase zone is defined as at least 1.5 baseballs outside the strike zone in any direction.

Contact Metrics

IZ Miss%
Whiff percentage on pitches in the strike zone. Measures ability to make contact on hittable pitches.
FB Miss%
Whiff percentage specifically on fastballs. Important for evaluating contact ability against the most common pitch type.
2K Fight%
Number of two-strike fights divided by two-strike swings. A two-strike fight is a foul ball or ball in play with two strikes. Measures competitiveness in two-strike counts.

On-Base Metrics

BB%
Walk percentage. Measures plate discipline and ability to draw walks.
K%
Strikeout percentage. Key metric for evaluating contact consistency and plate discipline.

League-Benchmarked Color Coding

The report is color coded based on league averages for better interpretability, allowing coaches and players to quickly identify strengths and areas for improvement relative to the competition.
